Career Counselling For Parents

If your student is a:
High School Freshman/Sophomore
  • The Career Map experience focuses primarily on self-awareness and personal development.
  • The report outlines strengths and opportunities, provides resources for development and gives coaching suggestions for extra-curricular activities and behavior modification.
  • This early education in self-awareness helps to inform the choices students make regarding courses, support services and extra-curricular activities throughout high school. The objective nature of the report and feedback session compels students to be more open to the results as well as the development suggestions. It is not unusual to hear students say, “My mom/dad tells me that all the time!”
High School Junior/Senior
  • Career Map builds on the personal development component outlined above by correlating your student’s behavioral blueprint to the areas of study for which they have interest.
  • Career Map goes one step further—to identify other possible areas of study and specific college settings that mesh with their behavioral strengths and abilities.
  • The website provides students with tools to explore possible career options for any given major.
College Freshman/Sophomore
  • College students are really feeling the pressure to decide on a major and, more importantly, to understand the type of career that would complement their behavioral blueprints. Choosing a career that plays to an individual’s strengths ultimately provides students with the greatest opportunity for long-term success and happiness.
  • The Career Map results often confirm possible career interests or identify new paths they may not have considered. The report, interpreted by a certified coach, helps college students understand their behavioral abilities at a time when the information is relevant—as they are making choices that will affect them for years to come.
Understanding the Results:
  • Career Map is not a skim-the-surface personality test. Your son/daughter will not get high scores for every behavior; a range of scores is perfectly normal. Depending on what career they choose, high scores in some traits could actually be a drawback.
  • Don't be discouraged if the match to their top major is not as strong as you expected. They have several years to develop the opportunity areas that are affecting their scores. Their Career Map coach can help them identify and improve these behaviors.
  • The Grid: The behaviors in the grid are grouped in order of importance to the top major selected by the student. For example, if a student selects Accounting as his first choice, the report will print three groups of 11 traits in order of importance for success in Accounting. The dashes represent the desired range for each behavior and the dot represents your student’s score.
  • The Coaching Guide:
    • Opportunities: If a behavior is listed in the opportunities section of the report, it is because your son/daughter rarely identified with this trait over others it was paired with. It does not mean they do not have the ability to develop the trait. Encourage them to follow up on the suggestions given by their Career Map coach and to use the resources provided in the report.
    • Strengths: It is important not to assume the behaviors listed in the strengths section need no further development. The development of strengths is equally, if not more important than the development of opportunities.
Exploring the Resources in the Report:
  • Take time to explore the many helpful websites listed in the report; these resources can enhance students’ skills in areas such as time management, expository writing, preparing and giving presentations, avoiding procrastination, increasing assertiveness and developing good study habits.
